The other week I heard a song where someone descirbed how they were their own grandfather. I was amused by the song, but decided that I had to do a genealogical tree to see if it was indeed possible -- because it certainly didn't seem possible. But...I am here to tell you that, as discussed in the song, it is possible to be your own grandfather.
First, listen to the song. (The lyrics are further below.)
Below is the family-tree I did to verify that this is possible. Since the song explains the relations, I won't go into detail. You can listen to the song and visually follow along in my diagram. To help you get started, the singer is the red male (square) (which would make the blue circle the widow...you should be able to figure-out the rest).
That is one screwy family-tree!! And if you think I'm weird for plotting this out, think about the person who figured this out (please, I hope, this is not based on a real family).
I'm My Own Grandpa(Ray Stevens)Many, many years ago when I was twenty-three,I was married to a widow who was pretty as can be.
This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red.
My father fell in love with her and soon they, too, were wed.
This made my dad my son-in-law and really changed my life
Now my daughter was my mother, 'cause she was my father's wife.
And to complicate the matter, even though it brought me joy
I soon became the father of a bouncing-baby boy.
My little baby then became a brother-in-law to dad
And so became my uncle, though it made me very sad
For if he were my uncle, then that also made him brother
Of the widow's grown-up daughter, who, of course, was my step-mother.
My father's wife then had a son who kept them on the run
And he became my grand-child, for he was my daughter's son.
My wife is now my mother's mother, and it makes me blue
Because, although she is my wife, she's my grandmother too.
Now, if my wife is my grandmother, then I am her grandchild
And every time I think of it, it nearly drives me wild
'Cause now I have become the strangest case you ever saw
As husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa.
I can't not dance, ugh...
Since Vox won't keep text formatting when I add it to the description field of the audio upload, the (phonetic) lyrics are below. Let me know if you have corrections.

Do you remember Batman Forever? Seal's "Kiss From A Rose" came out at that time.
This morning I heard the song, courtesy iTunes random-play, and as I was listening to it, I noticed something unusual. Well, unusual for American "popular music," anyway. The time-signature for this song is ¾. And with the song's tempo, it is very easy to dance to. What kind of dance, you might ask? A waltz!
Seriously. I had not realized this previously. I even tested this, early in the morning, by dancing a waltz (by myself, though). Anyway, I have uploaded the song so you may listen to it yourself. I have included the song in its entierity (did I spell that correctly?).
This is as a courtesy, of course; if you enjoy the song, the image at
the beginning of the post links to the Amazon.com page where you may
purchase this song if you find you enjoy it. Why would you pay for this song if I'm providing it for free? Simply so the RIAA does not try to jail me or make me pay some exorbitant fine. Personally, I do not care if you pay or get your music for free, provided you tell the judge that because of me you bought the song. ;-)
I also typed the lyrics. Yes, I was bored; and unable to sleep. And unlike many sites on the intertubes, my lyrics are almost always error-free. Which means you can easily follow along and will never be embarassed by mis-singing the lyrics around your friends. I do this because I care for you. ...And the song is not about drug-use, despite what a former co-worker of mine named James claims. It's about love. <3
"Kiss From A Rose"
- SealThere used to be a greying tower alone on the sea.
You became the light on the dark side of me.
Love remained a drug that's the high and not the pill.
But did you know,
That when it snows,
My eyes become large and,
The light that you shine can be seen.
Baby, I might compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grave.
Ooh, the more I get of you
Stranger it feels, yeah.
And now that your rose is in bloom,
A light hits the gloom on the grave.
There is so much a man can tell you,
So much he can say.
You remain:
My power, my pleasure, my pain.
Baby, to me you're like a growing addiction that I can't deny
Won't you tell me is that healthy, baby?
But did you know,
That when it snows,
My eyes become large and,
The light that you shine can be seen.
Baby, I might compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grave.
Ooh, the more I get of you,
Stranger it feels, yeah.
Now that your rose is in bloom.
A light hits the gloom on the grave,
(I've been kissed by a rose on the grave)
I've been kissed by a rose on the grave
(I've been kissed by a rose on the grave)
I've been kissed by a rose
(I've been kissed by a rose on the grave)
And if I should fall, at all
(I've been kissed by a rose on the grave)
I've been kissed by a rose
There is so much a man can tell you,
So much he can say.
You remain:
My power, my pleasure, my pain.
To me you're like a growing addiction that I can't deny
Won't you tell me is that healthy, baby.
But did you know,
That when it snows,
My eyes become large and,
The light that you shine can be seen.
Baby, I might compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grave,
Ooh, the more I get of you,
Stranger it feels, yeah
Now that your rose is in bloom,
A light hits the gloom on the grave.
Yes I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grave.
Ooh, the more I get of you
The stranger it feels, yeah.
Now that your rose is in bloom,
A light hits the gloom on the grave,
Now that your rose is in bloom,
A light hits the gloom on the grave.
